“Understanding Sickle Cell Disease”
September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Let’s break the silence and shine a light on the complications millions face every day. #SickleCellAwareness

Priapism in Sickle Cell Disease
Male priapism is the persistent and unwanted erection of the penis that is painful and rigid

Female priapism refers to persistent, painful clitoral engorgement due to impaired blood flow. In SCD, sickled red blood cells can block the small vessels in the genital region, leading to ischaemia, swelling, and intense discomfort. It’s the same mechanism as penile priapism—just in a different anatomy.

Priapism isn’t just awkward—it’s a painful, hidden reality that many face in silence. It can cause  permanent damage, infertility… and emotional distress.
– Up to 35% of males with SCD experience prolonged, painful erections due to blocked blood flow.
If untreated, priapism can cause permanent damage, infertility in men and emotional distress. Research is lacking, and some health professionals overlook it, and it’s all misunderstood.
Let’s talk about it. Let’s advocate for better care.

Pain Crises/Vaso-Occlusive Episodes
Pain is the hallmark of sickle cell disorder. Imagine sudden, intense pain that feels like fire in your bones. Other times, it’s like lightning and thunder going through the body. That’s a sickle cell pain crisis—caused by blocked blood flow. It can last hours or even days. #PainCrisis #SCD

Acute Chest Syndrome
Trouble breathing, chest pain, fever—it’s not just a cold. Acute chest syndrome is a life-threatening complication of SCD. It needs emergency care. #AcuteChestSyndrome
